NEW VARIETY FOR 2015!

Remember how friggin cold you were during the winter of 2013-2014? Yeah, well this Russian Kale didn’t really care about your whining. It was too busy kicking winter’s ass! This is the only vegetable of any kind that survived for us without protection that winter. I grew out 8 different kale varieties and they all died but this one. Negative temperatures, feet upon feet of snow, and still it made it!

Seed for this crop was originally saved by Brooklyn Grange and then replanted for the fall of 2013. Since Kale is a biennial crop, it needs to go through a cold period in order to vernilize and go to seed in the spring. That process of allowing the weak plants to die in the cold of winter and saving seed from those that live is truly a natural selection that leads to an even better seed stock for future plantings. Oh, did I mention that this kale is delicious and incredibly easy to grow? A must-have variety.
